Stadium update - Tuesday, June 24

Members of the Shelby American Legion World Series committee held a short meeting Tuesday, then committee members stuck around for the ballpark cleanup. The Post 82 players were also on hand assisting with some of the work at Veterans Field and Keeter Stadium.

Here are a few photos of the upgrades taken Tuesday by Star assistant sports editor Gabe Whisnant. The canopy is completed (with two large fans) and the seats with backs in the middle of the stands are in place. Shelby Post 82 is slated to play its first home game of the season Thursday at 7 p.m. against Cherryville Post 100.

There are two big fans built into the canopy. On a hot early evening Tuesday, you could feel a nice breeze under there and the fans were on low.
Side view of canopy. Essentially, the only big piece of the project missing is the net in front of the canopy. According to head coach Mike Grayson, it should be in place by the end of the day on Wednesday, June 25.

Flags of all 50 U.S. states are down the left and rightfield lines. This is one of my favorite new touches to the ballpark.
