Trice signs contract with Rockies' organization

SHELBY -- University of North Carolina pitcher Tyler Trice, a former Shelby Post 82 American Legion standout, officially signed a professional baseball contract with the Colorado Rockies’ organization.

Jay Mathews, the Rockies’ scout for this area, came to the Trice’s home in Cleveland County to sign Trice Wednesday.
Trice, who went to the College World Series three-straight times during his collegiate career with the Tar Heels, was a 21-round selection in the recent major league draft and will report to the Rockies’ Class A affiliatae in Pasco, Wash., on Monday June 30. The team plays in a league with stops in Washingotn, Oregon, Vancouver (British Columbia) and Idaho. Trice finished with a 2.04 earned run average during his senior season. He pitched 17.2 innings and picked up one save. The righthander struck out 21 and walked nine as opponents hit just .185 off Trice.
Trice was named to the 2004 North Carolina American Legion State Tournament all-tournament team pitching for Mike Grayson's Post 82 squad.
